That Steakhouse Taste

Mmmmm! Can you smell it? That smell of a steakhouse? Getting a decent steak at a restaurant is one thing, but nothing compares to getting that perfectly cooked steak at a full fledged steakhouse!

But steaks aren’t the only thing to drool over at a good steakhouse. A quality steakhouse has amazing sides as well, and one popular one is some sort of mushrooms side. My family & friends tell me that my Steakhouse Garlic Butter Mushrooms is worthy of a classy steakhouse.

I love to make these when I grill steaks. While the steaks are grilling, I get everything ready. After grilling my steaks, I let them rest in foil for 10-15 minutes depending on the cut. I will use that time to make my sides like these Steakhouse Garlic Butter Mushrooms.

What Can I Serve with Steakhouse Garlic Butter Mushrooms?

Steakhouse Macaroni and Cheese

Mexican Street Corn Salad

  • 2 Tablespoons Butter, divided
  • 6 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher Salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire Sauce

  • 1/2 teaspoon Paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dried Oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dried Tarragon
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon Chili Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Browning Sauce, (like Gravy Master) optional
  • Fresh Chives, chopped for garnish

Ingredient Notes and Substitution

White Button Mushrooms – not only are these in every store, but they absorb everything. That means they suck up all that yummy sauce and butter flavor. Also, the natural flavor of white button mushrooms don’t fight with the flavors of the sauce. You can use baby bella (aka cremini) mushrooms as well.

Browning Sauce – I use browning sauce when making Steakhouse Garlic Butter Mushrooms. While it’s not absolutely necessary, it makes a deeper caramel color and loads of flavor, including sweetness. I use Gravy Master which you can get on Amazon.

How Are Steakhouse Garlic Butter Mushrooms Made?

  1. Clean the mushrooms and trim the dried pieces of the stems.
  2. In a medium skillet over medium heat, heat the olive oil and 1 Tablespoon of butter. Add the mushrooms and season with 1 teaspoon of Kosher salt. Stir and cook undisturbed for about 3 minutes.
  3. While the mushrooms are cooking, mix the spices – paprikaonion powderdried oreganodried tarragonpepper, and chili powder – and set aside.
  4. Next, add the spice mix and garlic. Stir and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
  5. (Optional Step: if desired, stir in the browning sauce and cook for 1-2 minutes until the mushrooms are coated and the sauce is reduced. Browning sauce gives everything a dark look and adds sweetness.)
  6. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce. Cook for about 2-3 minutes to reduce the sauce. The mushrooms will also absorb much of the liquid. Finish with the remaining 1 Tablespoon of butter.
  7. Garnish with chopped chives and serve!

Steakhouse Garlic Butter Mushrooms Pro Tips

Selecting and Preparing the Mushrooms. When I’m using mushrooms whole, I look for packages where the mushrooms are all a similar size. This allows for even cooking.

Mushrooms usually have dirt on them. To clean them, take a paper towel and wipe off the dirt. If you rinse them, they absorb some of the water. In this application, you want the mushrooms to absorb the sauce. So avoid rinsing them with water. It might take a few seconds longer, but it will affect the taste!

Browning Sauce. If you’ve never used browning sauce, a little goes a long way. I recommend trying it at least once. It’s awesome with things like sauteed onions & mushrooms to put over steak!
